Source and Destination of Emigrations

Where do they go?

This is an animated geographical network visualisation that depicts the primary emigration destinations of South East Asians. The indicator used for the number of migrations is from the countries in the South East Asian region to countries with the "High-Income Economies" classification by World Bank.

To use the visualisation, click and drag to navigate around the globe, scroll to zoom, click on a country to display emigrations indicated by its flight path, and mouse over flight paths to see its migration numbers.

Context

It is apparent that brain drain is a significant issue within the South East Asian region, with many highly educated or highly skilled professionals leaving their home countries in search of better work opportunities abroad.

To better understand this phenomenon, the geographical data visualisation created above shows the source and destination of these migrants.

By mapping out the flow of emigrations due to brain drain within South East Asia, we can identify countries that are affected by brain drain and the primary destinations of these emigrating individuals.

The visualisation may uncover underlying factors and motivations that contribute to brain drain, such as the lack of job opportunities, low wages, poor working conditions, poor economic growth and political stability.

Key Findings

This section highlights all key findings found within the visualisation above.

At least

71%

of Malaysia's brain drain goes to Singapore

Despite having a smaller geographical landmass, Singapore's strong economy and its close proximity to Malaysia managed to lure most Malaysians away from their home country.

Could it be due to the 3.50 exchange rate?

Only approximately

13.6%

of Myanmar's emigrations are due to brain drain

Myanmar, one of the countries with the most number of emigrations (12,000,000), has one of the lowest number of emigrations due to brain drain.

Saudi Arabia is the main country causing brain drain in Myanmar.

Perhaps Saudi Arabia has been importing skilled construction labour from Myanmar?

The grass is always greener on the other side.
